Before we go into the details of what are the benefits of the different Hospital Information Systems (HIS), it is first important for us to understand that why does the need for such information systems arise?
Most healthcare organizations are facing the challenges in their day-to-day operations related to management and integration of clinical, financial as well as operational information. The need is growing rampantly with time and various technological advancements. These needs are also growing since the global healthcare industry is evolving continuously owing to new research studies and later adopting the new medical technologies, etc. With these increasing needs, the healthcare professionals require software systems such as the hospital information systems (HIS). Now these systems have become a vital part of both large, big-sized hospitals to small-sized hospitals or healthcare providers. However, it is extremely important that the implemented systems should be able to keep pace with the changing trends in technology. Additionally, it should also be able to leverage the existing infrastructure of a given hospital.
Mostly people ask are all Clinical Information Systems (CIS) same as the hospital information systems and what are its Benefits? Well, both of them are synonymous with each other and may refer to comprehensive and integrated information systems which are designed in a manner such that they can help in the management of administrative, financial as clinical aspects of a particular hospital. A hospital information system comprise of one or a few software components. There are specialty specific extensions available in these hospital information systems. There are different sub-systems also available that can take of information integration related to different medical specialties such as pathological laboratory information system, radiology information system, etc. At times, CIS may be considered different from HIS in the manner that CIS may largely concentrate on the patient-related information or clinical condition related information whereas the HIS may be more concerned with the administrative and financial data. However, since the distinction between the two terms is not crystal clear, therefore they are most of the times used synonymously with each other.
The implementation of HIS may prove to be a comprehensive solution which helps in automating clinical, administrative, financial as well as supply chain functions at a hospital. Thus, these systems can greatly help the healthcare providers in improving their operational effectiveness. This can further translate into reduction of costs as well as prevention of different medical errors while extending patient care. Thus, all in all the quality of care can be enhanced by implementing the hospital information systems.
