Hospital Information Systems – The Challenges Involved
By: Amanda Knapp On: April 13, 2010
With increasing and evolving needs linked to the growing healthcare industry, implementation of the hospital information systems which can keep up with the pace is becoming increasingly important and prevalent. These hospital systems can lead to a lot of benefits by ensuring and streamlining the different operations at a healthcare facility. Thus, medical practice is transforming from the automation of the manual processes to implementation of greater technology advancements.
However, with all the advantages and benefits that may be assured with these systems, they may also be associated with certain issues and challenges. These include ensuring open standards, presence of reliable networks, availability of powerful hardware and software, etc. Additionally, another very important issue that may be involved is related to the cost of implementing the different hospital information systems.
Another important issue that may be faced by the healthcare providers when considering the implementation of these healthcare information systems is that what should be done with the old systems when they decide on to adhering with the newly implemented systems. Key to managing all these issues is largely related with ensuring cooperation, creative thinking while implementing these systems.
While implementing these systems, it is also extremely important to also appoint hospital information managers in order to effectively ensure the implementation of the systems. However, what is very important to ensure is that they should possess necessary skills to facilitate and manage the transition from older systems to the newer systems. They should help all the members of the team in bridging the gaps during this transition period. They should be able to achieve the actual purpose of implementing the hospital information systems that is related to streamlining the management of information. They should be able to ensure the implementation of these systems actually results into systems insight, system information and systems problem solving from the intuitive guesswork, limited availability of information and isolated problem solving. It should prove to be an effective method in aiding the different administrators to make careful and intelligent decisions.
The hospital information systems which are so implemented should be able to lead to benefits for doctors, nurses, etc. in the form of procuring qualitatively better and more data with respect to their different patients. Additionally, it should make the direct consultation of colleagues and experts possible based on the decision based systems. It should definitely help in reducing their overall workload and lead to an increase in productivity of the other hospital staff as well.
